TASCS Summer Road Trip Series: Journal Entry #2

This summer, TASCS is visiting ambulatory surgery centers throughout Texas. The goal is to learn even more about these facilities and, by shining an even brighter spotlight on them, to continue spreading awareness about the growing ASC industry.

On June 23, TASCS was thrilled to be a part of a networking event at the newly opened Mann Cataract Surgery Center in Houston. Administrator Kayla Schneeweiss-Keene hosted a beautiful reception in the center’s waiting room, with its unbelievable views of the city’s skyline, as well as led attendees on a tour of the surgery center and the adjoining clinic.

“This center was designed with the patients in mind,” she shared. “We went from a two-bed preoperative area and two operating rooms to nine preop bay and four ORs.” The layout allows for efficient patient flow and easy access. The building was also specially designed to have at least one window in each operating room. “Dr. Mann is a firm believer in the benefits of natural light and wanted to make sure it was available throughout the building.”

The state-of-the-art facility is home to some of the most sophisticated equipment available to make cataract surgery as painless and quick as possible. The Femto Catalys Laser and the Zeiss Artevo 3D microscopes were part of the tour and had guests in awe.

Mann Eye Institute has various locations in the Houston and Austin areas, providing everything from LASIK eye surgery and premium lens implants to dry eye treatments. While helping patients to “See Life Better,” these centers offer same-day procedures that allow quick returns to normal lives and activities…one of the main ambulatory care benefits.

“It was so incredible to be able to network and tour the center with our Houston members,” said TASCS Executive Director Krista DuRapau. “The ASC industry is such a tight-knit community. We always end up laughing and having a great time with each other…even when we all got stuck on the first floor!”

TASCS is looking forward to the next road trip/center tour in Dallas this month, followed by the conference in August!
