The Texas Ambulatory Surgery Center Society is proud to have Kayla Schneeweiss-Keene as a new board member.

She has been part of the Mann Eye Institute family for more than 13 years, working her way up from lead nurse and assistant to the Director of Nursing within one year and on to ASC Manager, Director of Nursing, and, eventually, ASC Administrator. She remains a backup nurse, instrument technician, and scrub nurse when help is needed in the surgery centers.

“The ASC has been my home since graduating from college,” Schneeweiss-Keene shared. “I give 110% in what I do, which led me to more and more open doors.”

Her job entails overseeing operations in the Mann Eye Institute’s surgery centers of Houston’s museum district and Humble. She also leads ASC development, as a state-of-the-art facility just opened, located at the top of Mann Eye’s new 10-story medical office in Houston. In fact, TASCS visited, as part of the summer road trip series, and this helped Schneeweiss-Keene and Mann Eye receive the ASC Innovations Award at the TASCS Annual Conference! Future plans include building ambulatory surgery centers in other parts of Texas, such as Sugarland.

Despite the growth, Mann Eye is experiencing workforce shortages, just like the rest of us. “Staffing is our biggest challenge,” said Schneeweiss-Keene. “Finding good talent and keeping them when we cannot compete with hospital or multi-specialty salaries.”

This is something all industries are dealing with right now – especially healthcare. TASCS urges members to read our latest piece in Texas Business Today, an online newsletter from the Texas Workforce Commission. It covers why this problem is happening and resources that can help solve it.

Stay tuned for future Membership Monday posts, as we introduce other new board members!
